Meet Maya

Maya

As the girls basketball season ended this year, Maya reflected on all she has accomplished at St. Francis de Sales High School.  She walked off the court as an award recipient of the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference 2015-16 Varsity Basketball All Conference team. Her award reflected her athletic achievements and game statistics throughout the season but for her, it was just another indication of all she has accomplished at St. Francis de Sales.

“When I was 13 and attending St. Sabina Grammar School, I looked up to high school students who knew what they wanted to do and where they were going in life.  I know high school is about learning but I also wanted to make friends, play sports and become more confident”

Maya chose St. Francis de Sales because she wanted a small, community Catholic school.  At St. Francis every teacher knows her name and Maya knows all her classmates.  Maya did not realize how this same family school would give her a myriad of opportunities to grow and develop into the confident student and young adult she is today.

Coming to St. Francis de Sales gave Maya the opportunity to be a two-sport athlete, playing both Softball and Basketball for the Pioneers.  In 8th grade at St. Sabina Elementary School, all Maya knew is she wanted the chance to get a good Catholic education where she would have the opportunity to meet friends, know teachers and play the sports she loves.   She had no idea she would end up the senior class treasurer and an All Conference Team award winner.

Maya’s 14 year old self had no idea that her 18 year old self would have college acceptances from Dominican and Loyola and that she would have scholarships amounting to more than $165,000 to study Civil Engineering.   When asked about her growth, Maya said:

“Since freshman year I have become a lot more open minded and inquisitive and I've learned how important independence is during adulthood.”

If you ask Maya her favorite moment so far at St. Francis de Sales, it came during senior night for basketball as her teammates showed her how much of an influence she has for them. Maya felt honored.

We are honored to have Maya as part of the Pioneer Family.
